What is CMYK printing?

CMYK printing, also known as “Process Printing,” is an industry standard method of printing in full color. CMYK actually stands for the four colors used as part of this printing standard. C is Cyan, M is Magenta, Y is Yellow, and K is for “Key,” which is the description that printers use for Black ink. CMYK printing can reproduce most color photographs very well. In traditional printing, a full color photograph is scanned and then run through software to create “color separations.” Once the separations are processed, and “plates” are made for each of the CMYK colors, the printer runs the ink through the plates on press, and the result is your full color image printed on paper. CMYK is the most economical method of reproducing full color images in the highest quality, and most magazines and glossy collateral are printed using CMYK. CMYK is the standard method that Excell Print currently uses to process all print jobs for our customers. top

What should I know about color printing and proofs?

Computer monitors use RGB to display color. RBG stands for Red, Green and Blue. When you print to the CMYK process, for best results, you should convert RBG images, to CMYK images first. Sometimes you’ll notice slight changes to the image when you make this conversion, so it’s better that you see the changes first before uploading your file. Also, some colors that you see on your screen are very difficult to reproduce exactly using CMYK (or any other printing method). Therefore, if you have the software that enables you to convert your image to CMYK before uploading to Excell Print, you’ll have a better idea of what you’ll receive once the printed products are shipped to you. Note: Blues pose the greatest color-match challenges when converted to CMYK from RGB. top

Which browsers do you support?

Excell Print utilizes state-of-the-art AJAX and Microsoft.net technology. We recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5.5 or greater, AOL versions based on Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or greater, Netscape 4.x or greater, Firefox 1.5 or greater. top

What resolution does my artwork need to be for uploading?

For best results, save artwork to 300 DPI (dots per inch) at final print dimensions (full bleed size when uploading an entire product design). top

How can I reduce the file size of the artwork I want to upload?

Image editing software applications enable you to save your artwork in a format of your choice. In general, saving your file as a high resolution JPEG will help to reduce the size of your file while maintaining a relatively high quality image when printed. The following provide tips for reducing file size using specific application software.

Adobe Illustrator™: First, flatten the Illustrator file. Next, open the .ai file in Photoshop and verify that the file it is 1063 x 614 pixels*. Finally, save the file as a PSD to upload.

*If your Illustrator file is too large when opened in Photoshop, you have text or objects extending beyond the art board. Open the file in Illustrator and verify that no text or objects extend past the black box. Resave the file and repeat steps 1-3.

Photoshop: First, flatten the Photoshop file. If it is still too large, save it as a PDF Select encoding: JPEG Select #12 quality. Save the PDF and check the file size. If the file is still too large, try saving it at lesser and lesser quality until it is small enough to upload.

Other Programs: If your file is larger than 4MB, save it as a PDF, JPEG or TIF. These file formats compress images in different ways to achieve a smaller file size. PDF is a good choice for simple line art. JPEG reduces the number of pixels and will work well for photographs that are too large to upload. Experiment with different levels of quality when saving to JPEG to get the best quality possible at an acceptable file size (less than 4 MB). GIF compresses files by reducing the number of colors displayed in the image; therefore, it does not work very well for color rich photos. It is best for online display. TIF is also recommended for producing good quality printing products. top

Yes; Excell Print does offer two to three business day rush production services. You can select this option at the time of order. Your time-sensitive order is flagged immediately upon submission and is handled accordingly. top

How should I set up my bleed and crop marks?

Bleed must extend further than the cut line. Using one of our Excell Print & Promotions Templates can help you visualize this. Please keep all text and anything you do not want cut at least .125" away from the cut line. When sending an .eps or .pdf, make sure you include crop marks so we can cut the job correctly. top

What is overprint, and how can it ruin my file?

Primarily used to intentionally overlap inks for a number of reasons, overprint can cause unexpected results. We suggest that you turn all overprint objects off before submitting your files top

How can I make sure my blues do not come out purple?

When using a blue in your design, always make sure to leave at least a 30% difference in your Cyan and Magenta values. 100% C 100% M 0% Y 0% K On Screen, After printing blue is close to purple in the CMYK spectrum. Remember, use a low amount of magenta whenever using high amounts of cyan to avoid purple. Example: C-100 M-70 Y-0 k-0 top

How do I get a grayscale image in a CMYK document?

Grayscale images that are converted to CMYK will have a color shift in the final print. That shift may be green or yellow. Always check the CMYK values of your grayscale in the final CMYK document. If there are other values other than K in your grayscale image, there is a chance that the color will vary. To eliminate all values other than K, use your Channel Mixer (adjustment layer) in Photoshop, then click "Monochrome" and adjust accordingly.top

What is rich black and how can I get it?

Rich black is an ink mixture of solid black, 100% K, with additional CMY ink values. This results in a darker tone than black ink alone. If you print black alone as 100% K, the resulting black may not be as dark as you might like. We recommend using C 60 M 40 Y 40 K 100 this will give you a deep, dark, rich black.top

What is banding?

Many things can cause banding. Banding can be caused by the program that it is exported from, such as Indesign or Corel. Also, too many gradient steps, for example going from a very light color to a dark color, in a small area will cause banding. To prevent this, check your digital files before sending. If you use a gradient, make sure it has enough room for a smooth transition.top

Why is there cracking on my scoring job?

When a job is coated with UV then scored and folded the job may begin to crack. During use, the cracks will become bigger and the ink may start to chip off. Cracking is normal when coated jobs are scored and folded. Ordering the job without UV will help but may not prevent this. As the job is used and folded more and more, cracking will eventually happen.top
